March Meeting Highlights

Waterfowl Mortality on Georgian Bay

Dr. Brian Stevens, a Wildlife Pathologist at the CWHC, tests deceased animals for diseases. The results can be an early warning in the areas of wildlife health, climate change impacts, public health, and livestock health issues. If you find a dead animal without apparent trauma, contact the CWHC or visit their website for guidance.

On Georgian Bay, it is botulism that causes mass mortality events among our shorebirds. These outbreaks began in the late 1990s, coinciding with the spread of European mussels.  These mussels and mussel-eating small fish become chambers of botulism toxin production, which are then consumed by mussel-eating birds and fish-eating birds, leading to large-scale deaths. Outbreaks end with winter migration. Humans are susceptible to botulism but only in the unlikely event of eating infected waterfowl. Pets are at risk if consuming infected waterfowl; keep pets away from dead animals.
