Speaker: Jan Sumner - Executive Director, Wildlands League

Speaker: Dave Pearce - Senior Forest Conservation Manager, Wildlands League

Jan Sumner is a Canadian conservation leader with more than 20 years of experience advancing large-scale land and water protection. She has served as Executive Director of Wildlands League since 2003, guiding the organization through major national and provincial conservation victories. She is a frequent speaker and contributor to national and international policy discussions. Jan has appeared before the federal all-party climate caucus, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development, lectured at universities, and presented internationally, including at the United Nations Forum on Forests in Rome.

Jan leads a dedicated Wildlands team committed in protecting wilderness, strengthening environmental governance and securing a liveable future.

Dave  Pearce is Wildlands League’s Senior Forest Conservation
Manager where he works to improve forest management and bolster conservation efforts in Southern Ontario.  Dave delights in finding the
productive space where thoughtful resource use and creative conservation can yield great benefits for ecosystems and communities.  Dave is the lead for Wildlands League’s Nature Connectivity Project which envisions a protected and connect network from Windsor to Algonquin Park and Georgian Bay to the Kawarthas and beyond. He also works on forestry issues, particularly the preservation of caribou habitat in Ontario’s boreal forestry tenures.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE:

Wildlands League is one of Canada’s pre-eminent conservation organizations.   They are a not-for-profit charity that has been working in the public interest since 1968, beginning with a campaign to protect Algonquin Park from development.

From Hudson Bay to Georgian Bay and beyond, Wildlands League is working for nature. Join Jan Sumner and Dave Pearce for a conversation on our vision and playbook. They'll discuss the twin crises of biodiversity degradation and climate chaos that challenge species and society, and share some of our projects making a difference. They’ll highlight how protected area initiatives, ecological corridors, road ecology and ecosystem services like carbon storage and flood protection are helping preserve a livable planet.

Jan and Dave will provide an update on the Development of Wasaga Beach and will leave time to take your questions.
