Dr. Bruce McKay 

Dean - Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Wilfrid Laurier University


Dr. McKay received his PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta) in 2006 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine (Department of Neuroscience) (Houston, Texas). He joined the Department of Psychology at Laurier in 2008 and has served as Associate Dean: Student Services in the Faculty of Science (2015-2018), Senior Advisor to the Provost (2018-2019), Chair of the Department of Psychology (2019-2021) and now as Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, and the Wilfrid Laurier International College.

Cannabis and the Aging Brain

Provide an overview of the effects that medicinal and recreational cannabis use (and use of cannabis derivatives, like CBD) has on brain and body and behaviour across the lifespan.

  • Discuss - The neuroscience of short-term effects of cannabis (from the munchies to driving impairments to treatment of pain and arthritis and sleep disturbances and other ailments).
  • Discuss - Why it isn’t possible to lethally overdose on cannabis.
  • Discuss - Long-term effects of cannabis (with a focus on addiction and the differential effects of cannabis on teenagers vs. adults).
  • Review - Cannabis laws in Canada.
